Major Wingate Signs in Greece
Sep 29, 2006, 07:02 pm
Tennessee Vols rising senior Major Wingate landed on his feet in Greece after being kicked off the team for allegedly failing two drug tests. The failed drug tests reportedly came within a few months of each other.

Wingate will play for Makedonikos Kozani in the Greek first division, a team located in Northern Greece that finished in 11th place last season.

He will be automatically eligible for the draft this June and undoubtedly will be followed by NBA scouts. Despite averaging only 10.6 points and 4 rebounds for an up-tempo team that sorely lacked any kind of inside presence, it's safe to say that Wingate caught the eyes of scouts with the way he played in the NCAA Tournament, averaging 15 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4 blocks in two games.

He's got the physical attributes down pat; including good size at 6-10, excellent strength and plenty of athletic ability, but is still a fairly raw player who struggles with poor hands and average shot selection. It will be interesting to see how his game translates to the European level, as the Greek league is considered one of the strongest in Europe but are not exactly known for paying on time or being patient with young players.

Edit: We've learned that Wingate will be going on a one month long tryout.
