Johnson was not quite as impressive Sunday night as he was in the two previous days, as his mega-talented Stoneridge Prep team was upset by MCI in the finale of the National Prep Tip-Off. He showed very little in terms of leadership skills, and ability to run a team. Granted, the Minnesota native was coming off of a leg injury sustained Friday night, but Stoneridge was desperate for someone to step up and take control of things late in the game, and Angelo was nowhere to be found.

On the bright side, the junior continued to show that he has the ability to break down just about anybody off of the dribble, and finish in the lane despite his small stature. He used his body incredibly well in the paint, allowing him to finish over much taller and more athletic defenders all weekend long.

The biggest question that college coaches will ask themselves is “Can this guy run my team?” To be honest with you, I cannot tell you how well Johnson will be able to run a team at the high major collegiate level, considering that he can't even run a team at the prep school level. It is clear however that he can score on just about anyone in the country, from absolutely anywhere on the court. It must be noted that Johnson was an original member of the class of 2006 at Minneapolis Henry HS, and has since reclassified two years below to the class of 2008, making him yet another casualty in the prep school reclassification game.

The diminutive and surprisingly unheralded Angelo Johnson continued to make noise for himself on the recruiting trail, using his superb quickness and explosive first step to get into the paint almost whenever he pleased against Lee Academy, scoring 19 points on 7-8 shooting from the free throw line. The fact that he’s only a junior showed at times, but without him Stoneridge looked absolutely lost. Johnson looks very much out of control from time to time, driving down the lane with a full head of steam and not really seeing the floor as he makes his way in for an athletic finish. He has great ball-handling skills and plenty of hesitation moves he can go to, so getting in to the lane really isn’t a problem for him at this level when he decides to put his mind to it. Organizing an offense in the half-court effectively on a consistent basis sometimes is, though… Stoneridge was up by 19 points at half time and were down by 2 points just 11 minutes later, and Johnson was partially to blame for that. The pretty jumper he showed yesterday wasn’t falling for him tonight (6-15 from the field), but the terrific lateral quickness and excellent hands to get in the passing lanes most definitely were.

Throughout day one, Johnson was esily the most Impressive guard we saw here in Massachusetts. It is absolutely absurd that a player of his caliber has slipped under the radar this far, and he proved this evening that he is truly one of the biggest sleeper point guards in the class of 2008 with his gutty play throughout an ankle injury.

As the game started, we initially viewed Johnson as a bit out of control, as he took many heavily contested shots. However, the diminutive guard was able to make contested shot after contested shot, making us realize that these were not forces; These contested floaters in the lane were the strength of his game.

The Stoneridge junior showed the ability to score on absolutely any defender Notre Dame put on him whenever he wanted. It did not matter if it was from the three point line, from the mid range jumper, or from his soft floater in the lane, Angelo would find a way to score. He displayed amazing quickness off of the dribble and creativity once he got in the lane, evidenced by the fact that he constantly got shots up in the paint over athletic marvel Michael Beaseley. The Minnesota native also did an excellent job finding teammates for open jump shots, which unfortunately they were not able to convert.

On the down side, Johnson did finish the game with 8 turnovers. This was partially due to the fact that he was credited with turnovers when his big men did not catch the ball, which must be kept in mind when analyzing this amazing, courageous performance. Angelo’s mobility was limited severely in the second half by what appeared to be a mild ankle sprain, but he still nearly single handedly carried his team back to victory.

On the day, the scoring guard finished with 25 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 8 turnovers. He shot 10-15 from the field and 2-4 from the three point line. While he put up these numbers in defeat, Johnson did establish to college coaches, recruiting analysts, and basketball fans alike that he was clearly the top point guard here in Worcester on day one, and will make some high major college program very lucky once 2008 rolls around.
