DeAndre Ayton was also a last minute withdrawal, after already having committed to playing initially. Ayton did not have great showings at the BWB Global Camp or the Nike Hoop Summit last year and may prefer to wait on getting this type of NBA exposure until he arrives at Arizona in the fall.

#6) DeAndre Ayton, 7'0, Power Forward/Center, 18.0 years old, Bahamas

EWA: .9
PER: 29.4
TS%: 63.5%
15.3 PTS, 11.0 REB, 1.0 AST, 1.5 STL, 4.3 OREB, 2-5 3P% 13-16 FT%, 56.1 FG%

DeAndre Ayton was part of the loaded Team USA Harden that swept its four games en route to an Adidas Nations championship over Team Canada. Already one of the most highly recruited players in the class of 2017, Ayton was dominant again in Los Angeles, even playing alongside other top talent. He followed up his impressive Centrobasket performance for the Bahamas with another strong showing, leading the tournament in rebounds at an impressive per 40 clip of 18.5. At just 18 years old, Ayton already has elite physical tools, at 7'0 tall with a 7'5 wingspan, prototypical size for an NBA big.

What's so impressive about Ayton at this stage, is his physical and athletic abilities, and how he uses them to have an impact on the game. He has the ability to dominate the game in the paint, using his size and strength to finish inside, crash the boards, and protect the rim. He is not the most explosive athlete, but he is long, and quick off the floor, and has the fluidity and change of speed to look at ease running the floor in transition, not a skill many guys his size have. Ayton's back to the basket game is not yet polished, and he often just relies on his physical tools to get him what he wants. He is a willing passer, who can force things at times, but made some really nice high-low passes, using his size to see over the top of the defense.

Ayton's motor and aggressiveness has been questioned at times, often blending in, when it seems he should be able to impact the game on almost every possession. At 7-feet tall he can dominate the game in the paint, but can often get caught floating around the perimeter. He has some potential down the line as a stretch big who can spot up and shoot it from the deep, but his mechanics are inconsistent, and he still shoots it at very much a line drive angle. His desire to live on the perimeter has taken away from his ability to fit into a team structure, but that might of have been a point of emphasis for him in Los Angeles, as he only took five 3-pointers, hitting 2 of them, and showing more of a willingness to play to his strengths.

Ayton will have a big senior season ahead of him at Hillcrest Hoops academy in Arizona while he makes his college decision. Ayton has all the physical tools to be an impactful player at the NBA level, but he'll need to continue to play to his strength. His college decision will be very important for him, as he looks for a coaching staff that he can buy into, and that can get him to play up to his potential on every possession.

Mike Schmitz

Strengths
-Elite physical profile for an NBA big man. 6' 11.75” with a 7' 5.5” wingspan and a 9' 3” standing reach. Tremendous frame – 243 pounds. Chiseled with a proportionate upper and lower body. Massive hands.
-Outstanding fluidity and agility for a player that size. Great body control. Can really run the floor when motivated.
-Big time defensive potential thanks to his tools and agility.
-Very quick off of his feet. Able to keep plays alive on the glass thanks to his quick leaping, strength and reach.
-Has some touch around the rim.
-Flat, inconsistent mechanics but has shown that he can make an open spot up 3, something quite rare for a 17-year-old, fairly raw big man. Could become a weapon in time.
-Can make basic high-low passes.

Weaknesses
-The game is too fast for him at this stage. Doesn't have a great feel for where to be on the floor, when to attack and when to distribute. Wants to float on the perimeter at times.
-Lacks basic moves in the post. Could use a more reliable jump hook and a counter move.
-Doesn't protect the rim despite his tools and quick leaping ability. Below average awareness and instincts.
-Shoots it very flat with a low release point. Mechanics seem to change by the day. Has potential down the road but it's not realized at this stage, especially considering how many jumpers he takes.
-Very agile but not quite a freak leaper.
-Competitiveness really comes and goes. Best when playing mad but doesn't always have that mean streak or will to compete.
-Very emotional.
-Has the tools and upside but has yet to show production.

Outlook The second-youngest player on the World Team, Ayton proved to be more prospect than player at this stage of his development. With elite physical tools and potential offensively, it's easy to see why Ayton is so highly regarded, but he seems to leave NBA scouts and decision makers wanting more. Very little has been demanded out of Ayton at this stage, as he hasn't received very high-level coaching, and you can't teach some of the gifts that he has. But does he possess the drive to maximize his potential? If he's able to develop that competitive spirit, Ayton has No. 1 pick potential. The World Team's weak roster most certainly didn't do him any favors. The Bahamas native is one of the most intriguing long-term prospects in all of high school basketball, and it will be very interesting to see how he looks a year from now in the 2017 Nike Hoop Summit, should he accept an invitation.

2016 Nike Hoop Summit: International Measurements

Height (w/ shoes): 6-11.75
Weight: 243
Wingspan: 7-5.5
Hand Length:: 9.5
Hand Width: 9.5
Standing Reach: : 9-3
Country: : Bahamas

There isn't much more to be said about Ayton's measurements that hasn't already been said. He has unbelievable physical tools for a high school junior in terms of size and length. Up almost 10 pounds since the last set of measurements we have for him from last summer, Ayton already stacks up favorably with Spurs power forward LaMarcus Aldridge who measured 6'11.25 in shoes with a 234-pound frame and a 7'4.75 wingspan coming out of Texas in 2006.

DeAndre Ayton, the Bahamian 7-footer who is playing this season with Hillcrest Hoops out of Arizona, is widely considered the #1 player in the high school class of 2017, and subsequently the 2018 NBA Draft. There is a school of thought that he might be the best prospect in all of high school basketball in fact, which is saying something considering how loaded the 2016 senior class is considered to be.

An incredibly gifted 7-footer with ideal physical tools, an increasingly versatile offensive game, and tremendous overall upside, Ayton has an opportunity to solidify his standing in front of countless NBA decision-makers. That is increasingly important, as there are some question marks whether he will be eligible to compete in college in the 2017-2018 season, and he did not play up to his full potential at the Basketball Without Borders Global Camp in January where many NBA teams got their very first look at him. Ayton seemed bothered at times by the physicality of the very strong crop of international big men that he faced in Toronto, and was a step slow at times with his decision making and reaction speed. Not particularly well-coached at this stage of his career, Ayton is far more used to the loosey-goosey nature of high school and AAU basketball, where making highlights sometimes takes precedent.

Nevertheless, Ayton is an incredibly rare physical specimen with phenomenal upside as a shot-blocking, 3-point shooting, rebounding machine. He's young enough to still make up much of the ground he's lost with the roller-coaster ride he's been on the past few years since emigrating from the Bahamas, and competing in settings like this, where he'll be challenged by the coaching staff and facing elite-level competition over the course of a week, should help tremendously with his development.

DeAndre Ayton, 7'0, Hillcrest Hoops, Bahamas, 1998

Jonathan Givony

Strengths:
-Physical specimen. Has a perfect frame for a modern day NBA center. Very well proportioned with long arms. 7' 4.5" wingspan and 9' 4.5" standing reach
-Moves exceptionally well for a player his size. Runs the floor. Quick off his feet. Highly explosive. Excellent body control
-Excellent hands. Catches everything.
-Shows some ability to stretch the floor. Can make a catch and shoot jumper, or even a pull-up at times. Better from mid-range spots but shows the potential to extend out to the 3-point line. Mechanics need to be cleaned up, but ball comes out of his hand nicely, and there's no question he can develop into a very good shooter in time.
-Can attack defenders off the dribble in a straight line using a powerful first step and very long strides. Will mix in an occasional spin-move
-Has very soft touch around the basket. Will drop in an occasional jump-hook
-Outstanding rebounder thanks to physical tools, soft hands and solid instincts. Not afraid to throw his body around.
-Shows huge potential on defense when he's locked in and playing with a high motor. Talks to his teammates and shows some real personality.
-Difficult to back down in the post with his strong frame. Has very quick feet stepping out on the pick and roll. Can get down in a stance. Covers ground extremely well
-Upside is simply off the charts if he can put it all together. Situation will be huge for him

Weaknesses:
-Shows average awareness defensively. Often a step slow reacting to things on the fly.
-Doesn't always protect the rim at the level you might hope. Partially due to a lack of commitment/intensity, but also partially due to the fact that his timing is not off the charts.
-Doesn't show much of a back to the basket game. Doesn't really want to catch the ball in the post. Struggles when he does get touches down low. Footwork is rudimentary. Not much in the ways of countermoves. Needs to develop his off hand.
-Jump-shot shows great potential but is currently on the streaky side. Shoots a line-drive jumper with inconsistent mechanics.
-Doesn't really know his limitations offensively. Gets impatient when he doesn't get his touches and can get somewhat wild with his shot-selection and decision making
-Never boxes out on the glass.
-Fundamentals in general are not great. Motor/focus comes and goes. Doesn't really know how to play strong defense yet without fouling
- Already shows a superstar attitude. Faked an injury “cramps” and refused to participate in final day of camp, which caused many NBA scouts and the coaching staff to shake their heads.
-Very emotional on the court. Body language can be extremely poor. Complains a lot when things don't go his way and is quick to point fingers at teammates, coaches, refs, etc.

Outlook: Big man with an unlimited ceiling. Can absolutely do everything on the floor when he's playing to his full potential. Was somewhat inconsistent at this camp, struggled with the physicality of the international bigs and the fact that the game didn't revolve exclusively around him like it has in every setting in his career thus far. Has undoubtedly been coddled quite a bit thus far and there are some question marks about whether he can/will achieve his incredibly high potential because of that. Does not seem to deal well with adversity. Maybe just a product of immaturity? Could really benefit from a year in college under a respected and strong-minded coach that will challenge him, but there are major question marks if he can get eligible due to the controversy surrounding his “high school.” Only time will tell, but may be too talented to pass up at the very top of the 2018 NBA Draft regardless.

-DeAndre Ayton is the clear headliner of this group. The Bahaman 7-footer who is playing this season with Hillcrest Hoops out of Arizona, figures to be one of the top players in the high school class of 2017 and subsequently the 2018 NBA Draft. An incredibly gifted 7-footer with ideal physical tools, an increasingly versatile offensive game, and tremendous overall upside, Ayton has an opportunity to solidify his standing as arguably the best long term prospect in high school basketball in front of countless NBA decision-makers. Ayton's reputation has been muddled by the bizarre circumstances surrounding him, as profiled by Seth Davis this past summer, and the controversy around the charter program he elected to join in the fall didn't do much to alleviate those concerns. Nevertheless, Ayton absolutely blew us away with his talent-level as a shot-blocking, 3-point shooting ultra athletic rebounding machine in the multiple occasions we've been able to observe him the past few months, and it's very likely he will do much of the same in Toronto.
