Breaking Down the 2017 NBA Draft's Loaded Guard Crop

From Markelle Fultz at #1 all the way down to Luke Kennard or Frank Ntilikina, the 2017 NBA Draft is loaded with elite guards at the top, and has depth at the position as well behind the cream of the crop. Eight of the fourteen 2017 lottery picks could very well be point guards or shooting guards, which would be the most guard-heavy draft since 2009.

The Gradual Erosion of the NBA Pre-Draft Process

The NBA league-office has tinkered for many years with the format of the NBA Combine (previously known as the NBA pre-draft camp) in an attempt to make it as useful as possible for NBA front offices in their decision making process. With a significant portion of the first round once again electing not to participate in any of the basketball activities this year, and the top three prospects electing to not even attend period, many will call for the NBA to go back to the drawing board to try and figure out a new format that makes this event as relevant as possible again for teams, prospects, media and the general public.

Analyzing the NBA Combine Results

Each year we’re presented with a spreadsheet of data from the athletic tests administered at the NBA combine, and each year we wonder just how relevant any of it really is. Though the conclusions that we can draw from the vast majority of the data is extremely limited, we’ll nonetheless try to take something away from the information we’ve been presented with.

Eight Rules for Draft Night Success: Let History Guide

Theories about proper NBA draft strategy may well outnumber the available players for next Thursday’s festivities. When deciding between two players rated similarly, a GM may drop back to the adage “you can’t teach size” and scoop up that raw 7-footer over the skilled but undersized point guard. Always in the backdrop of draft day decisions is the overarching debate whether to draft for need or for overall potential. We weigh in on some of the merits of these strategies, by bringing together observations we have made in a series of past articles that examined outcomes of the NBA draft from a number of different perspectives.

DX Measurements/Combine Database Expanded Significantly

DraftExpress is proud to present our in-depth NBA pre-draft camp measurements and athletic combine information database, a resource unlike anything you’ll find on the internet. During the last year, our measurements database has been expanded to include draft-prospects throughout the past 16 years. In addition, we recently received a very generous donation from an unnamed NBA team—the complete athletic combine information from the past 8 years (2000-2008), of which we only previously had the past 3. We've also added some very exciting new functions to help sort through this incredible database.

Much Ado About Nothing? The Rookie Season of the 2007 Draft Class

The 2007 NBA draft class was one of the most eagerly awaited in recent memory. After a series of mediocre draft classes, 2007 was hailed as a return to greatness. Teams eagerly raced to the bottom of the league to increase their odds of drafting superstars Greg Oden and Kevin Durant. After last year’s disappointing class, which rivaled the all-time weakest in some eyes (including ours), the current class presented a refreshing return to high expectations. In addition to the star quality at the top of the board, there was much talk about the depth of this draft. There were reportedly very good players available in the late lottery, and fans expressed renewed hope that some late first and even second rounders could immediately turn into contributing players.

NBA Draft 2007--Winners and Losers, Ballpark Style

A breakdown of the draft?s obvious winners and losers, broken into four categories. The point here is to grade the draft based on who actually improved their franchise, as opposed to who did well given opportunities they had. A team like Seattle may not have gotten as much value as San Antonio based on opportunity, but still walk away from this draft a much bigger winner. Therefore, look for Seattle and San Antonio in separate categories. There are no incompletes here, as every team?s grade is incomplete until the players actually get on the court.

2007 NBA Draft Report Card

While it?s WAY too early to evaluate how well teams made out in this draft, we?ll attempt to take an early shot at grading the draft based on what we know now and what we heard and saw from covering the draft over the past few months.I: How well did the team in question satisfy their personal needs or fill the gaps they have on their roster with the hand they were dealt.II: How much value teams got from the picks they had. III: Subjective opinions on the player they got and how well they fit with the team?s style of play, the direction they are headed and what we know about the organization.

Training Grounds: The Minds Behind the Madness of Pre-Draft Workouts

Every year between the end of the end of the NCAA Tournament and Draft Day, scores of NBA hopefuls begin the intense process of preparing themselves for the audition of a lifetime. In a mere three months and change, top players from the United States and European Leagues will be poked, prodded, weighed, measured, and interrogated by the top brass of every Pro team. For the lucky few who show themselves well, the golden ticket of a guaranteed contract can be won, and with that a chance to play and prove their true worth on the next level. But, there are only so many chances and so small a time frame to showcase any and all hidden talents that somehow didn?t manifest themselves during seasonal play. For those players who are in favor coming into the process, the hungry masses competing for status will attack relentlessly from behind, scratching and clawing their way ever higher.

Waiting for Manu

As draft day approaches, a fog of excitement and apprehension swirls around the top international talents. Most international players, even the projected top-of-the-first-rounders, have had limited exposure in the U.S. market and are untested against the domestic college pool. By necessity, this leads to a certain level of extrapolation. Comments like ?If this guy was playing major college basketball, he?d be a better prospect than Al Horford? abound every year. For players projected to go later in the draft, there is an additional enticement: a team may draft an international player and keep him playing overseas for a couple of years and thus off the team?s books as they dance around the luxury tax threshold. This time of year, every team is searching for that player that will ferment, refine, and spring forth as the next Manu Ginobili.

Just by the numbers...Evaluating this Year's Shooting Guard Crop

Statistics are an important measure used by NBA teams to assist in evaluating prospects. When scouting players, it can be helpful to examine the stats to see if they back up your observations of a player on the court. The shooting guards compose the second look at the statistical break down of the 5 positions, and the top 20 at each position will be included. This piece may as well have been written by Morris Almond's agents, because he dominates virtually every category in it.

Navigating through the NBA Agent Selection Process

There is an argument to be made that for most NCAA players, no decision is more important when deciding to turn professional than the agent selection process. Agents play an absolutely essential role in helping steer their clients through the often very complicated NBA draft process. Starting with knowing the timing of when to declare for the draft, gathering feedback from NBA executives on a player?s draft stock, picking a suitable trainer to prepare for private workouts and (potentially) the pre-draft camp, setting up workouts and managing the ?hype? factor that can play a role in where a player is selected, and much much more?the wrong choice at this early stage can end up delivering a serious setback that some players just can?t recover from, shooting a career down before it ever gets off the ground. Note: This article was originally published in April of 2007

The Randolph Morris Loophole

Following the resigning of Kentucky Head Coach Tubby Smith, 6-11 Junior Randolph Morris has decided to leave Lexington to sign with the New York Knicks. The Kentucky Wildcats were blindsided by Morris for the second time in two years, as he apparently did not bother to inform them of his intentions. ?My understanding was that he is going to wait until a new head coach is hired to make a decision,? a representative of the Kentucky Sports Information Department told us earlier today. This move exposes a massive loophole in the NCAA rule book that allows underclassmen to declare for the draft and become NBA free agents with their NCAA eligibility still intact if they go undrafted, and could have huge implications on the thought process of when college players decide to enter their name in the draft.

Cavs/Bobcats Rookie Report

The Cavaliers/Bobcats game Wednesday night gave fans a glimpse of two of the more interesting rookies as of late. The Cavaliers brought promising second round guard Daniel Gibson, who has been outstanding in Cleveland?s previous two games against Indiana and New Orleans/Oklahoma City. The Bobcats on the other hand possess the number 3 pick Adam Morrison, who leads all rookies in scoring. Both players started the game on the bench, and while neither was on the floor during crunch time, a lot was learned in Cleveland?s 104-101 victory.

Missing the Point

Marcus Williams?s draft day plight is symbolic. Not merely of the tremendous potential for embarrassment if you accept an invitation to the green room, or NBA personnel folks? preference for measurements like body fat percentage and time recorded in hopscotch over the ability to actually play basketball. More than that, Williams?s plummet from the mid-lottery to Pavel Podkolzine territory symbolizes the death of the point guard as a position of consequence in today?s NBA.

2006 NBA Draft Report Card (Part Three: 22-Rest)

While it?s WAY too early to evaluate how well teams made out in this draft, we?ll attempt to take an early shot at grading the draft based on what we know now and what we heard and saw from covering the draft over the past few months. This report card was based off three things:I: How well did the team in question satisfy their personal needs or fill the gaps they have on their roster with the hand they were dealt.II: How much value teams got from the picks they had. III: Subjective opinions on the player they got and how well they fit with the team?s style of play, the direction they are headed and what we know about the organization.

2006 NBA Draft: Still An Inexact Science

It?s not when you get drafted, it is who you get drafted by. Is there anything else to take away from the 2006 NBA Draft? After a year of meticulously analyzing every available draft-related detail I could get my hands on, the same lesson comes to the forefront. The NBA Draft is not an exact science. Different teams are in different places, with different philosophies and different needs. And just because a player dropped 10 spots from his projected ranking doesn?t make him any less of a prospect than he was before he started to slide. The examples from this year?s draft are almost endless.

Help is Not on the Way (at least not immediately)

NBA draft week is a time of infinite hope, even in a year when the prospects are considered relatively weak Fans begin to speculate on whom would fill that hole in the rotation, how that ?piece? is out there if their GM is just savvy enough to obtain him. For teams ready to compete sooner rather than later, there is deep consideration given to the more ?NBA ready? player, sometimes code for those college seniors who have refined their game. But infused in much of this talk, is the belief that, at least by the player?s second year certainly, he will begin to meaningfully contribute to the team?s success.

Predicting NBA Draft Success and Failure through Historical Trends

The surfeit of discussion about how teams should best utilize their relative position in the draft begs the question: what do historical trends tell us about the probability of successful outcomes given even broad parameters? Obviously it still comes down to the evaluation of the individual, but even broadly, are there types of players who tend to do better than others? What is the wisdom of moving down and for what purpose? What have been some of the biggest errors made and who has made them? What can an analysis of player outcomes tell us about these and other issues?

It?s that time of the year again. Workouts are in full swing and NBA hopefuls are jetting around the country aiming to convince teams that they belong. For media and draft junkies alike, it?s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of workout buzz. Every day it seems like a mysterious new Brazilian with a 15 foot wingspan explodes onto the workout scene and instantly makes himself into a candidate for the lottery. But what do these workouts really mean? Can players really cancel out unproductive college careers by looking great during workouts for a month? Perhaps most importantly, what can NBA teams learn about players from watching them workout? It depends on who you talk to.

He has a 7-6 ¾ wingspan, and a 9-3 ½ standing reach. He jumps out of the gym with a 39 inch vertical, bench presses 185 pounds 24 times and runs a 3.3 in the three quarter court sprint. But can he shoot? Dribble? Catch a rebound? Play? Do we even care? It?s that time once again, our favorite time of the year of course; ten days before the draft when everything logical in regards to analyzing basketball gets flushed down the toilet. Instead we focus on superficial things that have proven again and again to have very little correlation with actual success in the NBA.

Draft Etiquette: It’s about situation, not position

One common theme that seems to permeate the atmosphere around draft time is the notion that somehow a player?s ranking is indicative of his true worth as a basketball talent. To many, this statement may seem like a given, in fact it is valued beyond the common fan and finds it?s way into even the most levelheaded basketball minds from time to time. However, if the history of the draft has taught us anything, its that the best laid plans go to waste once the tide of battle commences. For all the planning, posturing, and pontificating that goes on during the build up to June 28th, never has a career been made simply by being a lottery pick.

A Crash Course in "Testing the Waters"

On March 20th, the NCAA (specifically the Agent, Gambling and Amateurism Activities division) released a four page memorandum to every Division I college in America with information regarding the 2007 NBA draft, agents, and tryouts; from an intercollegiate eligibility perspective. DraftExpress received a copy of this memo for the second consecutive year, and as a media outlet dedicated to providing complete coverage of the NBA draft, is publishing it, as well as our own commentary on it's implications, in order to urge public discussion about the meaning of this policy and how it affects the NCAA and NBA draft process.

NCAA Tournament: Heart Condition

While the NCAA tournament isn?t the end-all-be-all of talent evaluation, there is a great deal that can be determined from how prospects perform under the immense pressure that the lime-light of tournament play brings to bear. Less than a month from now, when the bright lights and perspiration of this college season are a distant and fading memory, aspiring NBA prospects will be competing in an entirely different way. Teamwork and sacrifice, two defining elements of tournament success, will take a back seat to the cut-throat world of draft positioning. Like a heard of well-cured meat, prospects will line up to be measured, weighed, poked and prodded while dozens of league personnel make their final assessments on each players? worth.

Draft Etiquette: Surviving the Madness of March

For anyone reading these words right now, this is most likely your favorite time of year. The college game enthusiast has the NCAA tournament to look forward to, the gambler has their standard office pool, and the NBA fanatic is eagerly tracking every big game from the designated prospects they dream about watching on their favorite team. While it is easy to get caught up in the fever of big game players making big-time shots, the true basketball connoisseur must try with all due diligence to separate themselves from the hype of it all and use their analytical mind to separate out who truly constitute the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Suggested Rosters for 2006 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament

The Portsmouth Invitational Tournament is one of only two NBA pre-draft camps, traditionally held in the weekend following the NCAA final four in Portsmouth, Virginia. The organizers attempt to assemble the 64 best NCAA senior draft prospects in the country for an 8 team, 11 game tournament held over a four day period. The 54th edition of the tournament will be conducted this year from April 5th to April 8th. This is not the official list made by the committee, but rather our own personal suggestions and observations of who will or should be invited, made in conjunction with a large number of people who will have a say one way or another in who gets invited and/or attends, including NBA General Managers, Assistant General Managers, Player personnel directors, Scouts, NCAA coaches, NCAA players, NBA agents who will likely be representing some of these players, as well as others.

In Case You Missed It...the Top Weekly Performers, 2/13-2/20

After a brief week of negativity we are back in full force with another edition of the top weekly performers. This week's version is a bit of a mixed bag. Half a tribute to some of the best and most consistent upperclassmen who haven't gotten enough recognition on the site, and half a look at a couple of intriguing sleepers who have caught our eye as the season nears it's conclusion. There is a bit of overlap between the two as well as you might expect. Solomon Jones has been one of the best big men in the incredibly tough Big East all season long, but hasn't gotten much hype to back it up until now; Brandon Roy is making a strong case out West for joining Redick and Morrison as a first team All-American with a near triple-double; Alexander Johnson and FSU are finally starting to see the fruits of his labor pay off in the form of double-double after double-double in the ACC; Allan Ray finally gets a well-deserved mention thanks to his outstanding performance against UConn last week as well as his play all season long; Justin Williams is the 2nd best shot-blocker in the country despite playing on one leg all season long; and Maryland transfer Andre Collins is quietly showing the country why he may have deserved more opportunities than he garnered in his first three years in college, to the tune of nearly 27 points per game.

Vazquez's 4 year, 10 million dollar deal with Girona has to be especially concerning for NBA teams. The logic behind these moves are presented in a way that might shock you considering how much of an impact this could have on the future of international players and the NBA draft, including an analysis of the financial perspective which will play a huge role in how things pan out in the future.
Not on the Mock Draft/Early Entry List Commentary

This year, more than ever, there are an incredible amount of underclassmen, internationals, and high school players declaring for the draft. History tells us that the large majority of them will not keep their name in the draft, for a variety of reasons. Those names are not very hard to pick out from the early entry list if you are familiar with the player's situation, his skills, and the range he will be expected (or expecting) to be picked at--based on what we've seen from him over the course of the season and relying on NBA sources who have a good feel for who is serious about keeping their name in. Rather than take up a spot on the mock draft for these players for an entire month, we have instead decided not to list them with an explanation as to why, for the sake of consistency.
